He grew up in San Angelo, graduating from Central High School in 1968. He attended University of North Texas and later graduated from Angelo State University in 1979 with a degree in Computer Science. He met Carol Gully at ASU in the punch card room, and they married on August 1, 1980. He worked for GTE and then Verizon until his retirement.
