New Lancashire County Council leader voted in and cabinet appointed

Thursday’s vote of the full council saw County Cllr Williamson officially instated to run the authority for the next four years.
In a statement after the meeting, she said that the past year had been “exceptionally tough for everyone” because of the pandemic.
“Lancashire is a fantastic place to live, work and do business. We are really well-placed as the economy bounces back and with my cabinet, I am determined to help us recover and prosper.

Geoff Driver reflects on lifetime in local government

“I never start an argument and I’m never the first one to throw insults about.
But when people insult me, I say: ‘Okay, have some of this’,” admits the 76-year-old, with a smile that suggests he may have relished, rather than rued, the frequent occasions on which he has found himself at the centre of a spat.
The Burnley-born Conservative politician brought down the curtain on a near six-decade career in local government earlier this month by not seeking re-election to County Hall – and thus bringing to an end the second of two stints at the helm of an authority which he has controlled for eight of the last 12 years. ....

Election results 2021: Lancashire County Council choose new Tory leader

Conservative councillors have chosen the new leader of Lancashire County Council after holding control of the authority in Friday s elections.
Phillippa Williamson, who was the cabinet member for children s services and schools, was elected by a secret ballot of Tory members on Sunday.
She said she was honoured that the members had put their faith in her.
She will take over from Geoff Driver, who announced his retirement in February.
Ms Williamson described the election result, which saw the Conservatives win 48 seats on the council, as reflecting the hard work of our councillors over the last four years . ....

Lancashire County Council: New leader and deputy for ruling Tory group

Lancashire County Council has a new leader-elect after the ruling Conservative group chose children and schools cabinet member Phillippa Williamson to take on the top job.
She was elevated to the role of county Tory leader on Sunday afternoon, just 24 hours after the party comfortably retained control of the authority in the local elections.
The position in charge of the Conservative group – and the county council itself in the wake of the election result – was vacant after Geoff Driver, who has led the authority for the past four years, stood down at last week’s poll.
County Cllr Williamson’s official instatement as leader of the council will require a confirmatory vote of all of the authority’s members at a meeting later this month. ....
