Springfield, 6 other Western Massachusetts communities remain at ‘high risk’ of COVID Updated 12:14 PM; SPRINGFIELD — Springfield recorded 548 new cases of COVID-19 last week bringing April’s total to 1,278, said Mayor Domenic J. Sarno during a weekly update on the pandemic at City Hall. “We are still in the red, we cannot be lax. We must wear still wear our masks and take the necessary precautions,” Sarno said Tuesday. Other Western Massachusetts communities still at high risk include Chicopee, Holyoke, Ludlow, Monson, South Hadley and West Springfield. Sarno read reports from the Police Department, Fire Department and Department of Public Works noting that only one firefighter is out with COVID-19 at this time.

Field surveys have been completed and traffic studies of the tunnel system are expected to begin this week. The school tunnel, which is used by students and community members to get from Main Street to Plainfield Street under Birnie Avenue, has been plagued with leaks for more than two decades. Flooding has led to mold and made several rooms attached to the tunnels unusable. The rooms used to serve as community rooms for after-school activities.
