Reggae festival Kiwi Grooves gets underway with Tobias.
A hastily prepared rhythm and blues festival at Waitara sent many of its hundreds of attendees home with a warm soul, and lasting memories. The Kiwi Grooves concert on Saturday, featuring some of the country’s finest R and B musicians, was put together with only four weeks’ notice after organisers spotted a similar gig in Northland. Festival co-promoter Gina Blackburn said in spite of the short promotion period the crowd response was heartening. “It was a fantastic turn out with a really good crowd of around 900,” she said.

With only a four-week turnaround, a local community group has managed to bring some of New Zealand’s biggest R&B artists to Waitara in north Taranaki. Kiwi Grooves festival, featuring Che Fu, Tomorrow People and Ardijah, is an all ages music event at the covered North Taranaki Sports Hub Whai Tapuwae Nō Rongo-Clifton Park. It kicks off at 4pm on Saturday and runs until about 10pm. “This will be the biggest live music event we’ve ever held,” operations manager Gina Blackburn said.
