Starting Monday at 10 a.m., East Side residents and UW-Milwaukee students will have a new go-to spot when they have the munchies. Heather Gawlitta, a former Franklin school district teacher, and Cheba Hut is a marijuana-themed sandwich shop chain based in Denver, Colorado. While there is no presence of marijuana or hemp in the food, the restaurant offers toasted dishes to satisfy “the munchies” and drinks to cure “cottonmouth.” In addition to a wide variety of sandwiches (each of which can be made as a salad) there are nonmeat options such as the “Humboldt,” which comes loaded with provolone, guacamole, veggies, and dressing and the “Sticky Icky,” a peanut butter & jelly sandwich.

Cheba Hut to open first Milwaukee-area location next year Taking over former Blaze Pizza on North Oakland Avenue Share Cheba Hut is moving forward with plans to expand into the Milwaukee area. The Fort Collins, Colorado-based company expects to open its second Wisconsin restaurant, in May 2021 on Milwaukee’s Upper East Side, according to a license application filed with the City of Milwaukee. The storefront at 2907 N. Oakland Ave. previously housed Blaze Pizza and currently shares the building with Good Land Wing Co., which Local franchisee Robert Huhn is listed on the application as owner of the new Cheba Hut restaurant, and Heather Gawlitta is listed as the agent.

The Denver-based chain operates on a franchise business model, with no pot or hemp derivatives in the food, just in the vibe, offering dishes to satisfy “the munchies” and drinks to “cure cottonmouth.” There’s currently a Cheba Hut operating in Madison and this will be the first one to open in Milwaukee.
