California sues to recover cleanup costs at Vernon smelter

LOS ANGELES (Legal Newsline) – The California Department of Toxic Substances Control is suing NL Industries and other companies for recovery of cleanup costs at a metals smelter in Los Angeles County.
This smelter “spewed dangerous heavy metals and other toxins into the air, onto the ground, and into the water,” says the lawsuit, filed Dec. 14 in Los Angeles federal court.
The most recent owner of the Vernon property is Exide Technologies, which has gone bankrupt. There is not enough left in the company’s trust to completely remediate the property, the suit says.
So California is suing other companies, like former operator NL Industries. Other defendants are JX Nippon Mining, Gould Electronics, Kinsbursky Bros. Supply, Trojan Battery Company, Rambar Batteries, Clarios, Quemetco, International Metals EKCO and Blount, Inc. ....

California sues to recover costs for Exide lead cleanup, but community still wants justice [Los Angeles Times]

California sues to recover costs for Exide lead cleanup, but community still wants justice [Los Angeles Times]
Years after pledging to recover cleanup costs from those responsible for spreading lead pollution over thousands of homes in southeast Los Angeles County, California regulators have finally filed suit against multiple companies connected to the closed Exide Technologies battery recycling plant in Vernon.
The action notably excludes Exide, which under a recently approved bankruptcy plan was allowed to walk away from the half-demolished hazardous site and stick California taxpayers with much of the cleanup bill.
That angered community groups and environmentalists in the largely working-class Latino neighborhoods surrounding the plant, who reacted tepidly this week to news of the lawsuit, asking why it took so long and what it would change on the ground. More than six years into the cleanup effort, thousands of homes and other properties across a massive cleanu ....
