Checks proposed for Irish land border will not solve sea border issues, MPs told

Adopting technology-based proposals originally envisaged for Irish land border checks would not resolve Brexit’s Irish Sea border issue, a trade expert has told MPs.
Shanker Singham was a key figure in the Alternative Arrangements Commission that outlined a blueprint in 2019 for avoiding the Brexit “backstop” plan advocated by then-prime minister Theresa May.
It proposed using existing technical and digital approaches, along with trusted trader schemes, as a way to manage Brexit checks between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic without the need for physical infrastructure on the border.

Continue sending your goods to NI, government tells companies

The UK Government has said businesses in Great Britain should still be sending parcels to Northern Ireland amid concerns over cancelled orders and delayed deliveries.
Customers of firms like John Lewis, Next and Dunelm have all been told their deliveries are delayed, while orders with TK Maxx are cancelled.
Under the NI Protocol, companies sending parcels here have to complete customs declarations.
While a three-month grace period is in force, it was not announced until shortly before the protocol began to apply at 11pm last Thursday.
