Many communities hit hard by tornadoes had advance warning of dangerous weather. But that was not always enough to save lives.

Rescuers continued to tally the loss of life after Friday’s deadly tornadoes across six states. The death toll at a Kentucky candle factory appeared to be less than originally feared.
