Melcher-Dallas’ track squads will begin district playoff action today as they take a trip northwest to Madrid for their state-qualifying meet. The Saints are coming off competing in the last regular-season meet at conference foe Lamoni Monday. Melcher-Dallas’ girls finished fourth in the meet, and were led by another school record-breaking performance from Grace Overgaard in the Shot put. The Saints’ boys finished fifth, including a first-place finish from Ryan Krpan in the 800 meter run. The state-qualifying meet at Madrid will begin with field events at 4:00 PM.

Melcher-Dallas’ track squads will be back in action for their next meet as they travel to Newton with fellow Marion County foe Pleasantville. Both Saints’ squads came off competing in the Bluegrass Conference Tournament at Lamoni Tuesday. The boys finished with a total of 42 points, placing seventh. Melcher-Dallas had just one first-place finish, which came in the 1600 meter medley relay. The relay was run by Steven and Ryan Krpan, Evan Putz, and Logan Godfrey. Melcher-Dallas competed in their first coed track meet of 2021 at Meskwaki Settlement High School, as they finished second behind just HLV to start the season. The Saints’ girls got first place finishes in the 1500 and 3200 meter run from J’Lyn Knutson. Grace Overgaard also finished first in two events, which were in shot put and discus, with distances of 33’8” and 107’4”, respectively. Karsyn Mateer finished second in the high jump.   Leading the way for Melcher-Dallas in scoring was Senior Kynser Reed, who averaged over 12 points per game while also hauling down seven rebounds per game. The Saints’ top rebounder was Hailey Hoch, who averaged just under nine rebounds per game to go with her ten points a game. Melcher-Dallas’ top three-point shooter was Senior Haley Godfrey, who shot 31.5% from beyond the arc.   Next year, Melcher-Dallas will have a completely new starting lineup as Reed, Godfrey, Grace Overgaard, and Kacey and Riley Enfield all will be graduating.   The Saints had an up-and-down season this year, which included a COVID-19 shutdown, four players sitting out in the second half of the season, but also a stretch where they won seven of eight games. Leading the way for Melcher-Dallas this season was Kynser Reed, who averaged 12 points and seven rebounds. Also graduating from Melcher-Dallas is Haley Godfrey, Grace Overgaard, and Kacey and Riley Enfield.   Melcher-Dallas will be returning top rebounder Hailey Hoch, who had five games of ten rebounds or more. Hoch missed the second half of the season with a torn ACL.
