Grade teacher. additional security protocols are in effect and a major staffing shakeup in the schools at administrative offs. cbs s caitlin huey-burns is outside the school. reporter: when thomas britton picked up his six-year-old at the bus stop today, he felt relief. he said he had a great day, steams upbeat and happy. i ve hipping did go well. i think it could have gone worse is that britton s son was in the same class as the first grader who shot his teacher abby zwerner on january 6th. i had a quite a bit of shot and loved her. reporter: increased security at the school. teachers were given clear backpacks and told any items including lunches would be searched. everyone was instructed to use only the front door of the building where two metal detectors were installed. this is a strong community and we re here united, here to welcome back our kids. ....

Virginia elementary school will return to class tomorrow for the first time since a 6-year-old student allegedly shot a teacher. police saying the first grader brought a gun to school earlier this month and shot abby discerner in a classroom. the teacher survived the shooting but the fallout continues to grow in the wake of that incident. and joining me now is polo sandoval. and it seems like there is some uncertain as classes resume. do we know how things are going to look for the students and for the teachers too? reporter: uncertainty, but also some concerns that continue to grow amid of the parents there in newport news. especially as these children get ready to head back to class. we ve had an opportunity to speak to some of the parents. there are growing concerns. not just about the safety, but also about what school district is doing to ensure accountability here as that many parents that we ve heard from feel that they dropped the ball in terms of preventing this shooting fro ....
