Coronavirus Anniversary: 1 year later, Auburn Gresham is among the communities hit hardest by COVID


CHICAGO (WLS) The first person reported to have died from COVID-19 in Illinois lived in Auburn Gresham.
A year later it is one of the city s most hard-hit communities in terms of both human loss and economic impact.
In February of 2020 a former Save-A-Lot closed its doors to the public. A couple months later it has found a new purpose as a food and PPE distribution center as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold.
All of our work which we ve done for nearly 20 years is now focused on saving lives and addressing the impact that COVID-19 has had on our community, said Carlos Nelson with the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Group. ....

Pritzker administration invests over $3 million in support to help small businesses access federal assistance programs

SPRINGFIELD – Governor J.B. Pritzker announced on Friday, new investments by the State of Illinois to help more small businesses access federal COVID-19 emergency programs. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) will direct a $3.4 million investment to expand community navigator outreach programs and technical assistance services provided through the State’s Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs). These investments are designed to help more businesses take advantage of billions of dollars of financial assistance recently made available through the renewed Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), and with other federal programs set to launch in the coming weeks. ....

MLK Day 2021: Young athletes volunteer at Greater Chicago Food Depository for Martin Luther King Day


CHICAGO (WLS) To celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, many in Chicago and Illinois are observing a day of service.
A group of local and state leaders honored the call to service in Chicago, joining a citywide effort to help school children. Volunteers from City Year packed school supplies for students around the city.
From its earliest days, the COVID pandemic forced us to take public service beyond traditional association of those working in government and broadened it to encompass every role we play in the lives of our fellow residents, said Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
Dr. King has a rich history in Chicago, leading marches in 1966 and even renting a West Side apartment for a while. Illinois was the first state to recognize him with an official holiday in 1973, pushed by then-state representative Harold Washington. ....
