The son of former Cootamundra Maher Cup prop Jack "Swifty" James, he came to rugby league via rugby union after attending Newington College and playing a season of first grade with the St George rugby club. Merwyn “Merv” Cross, age 84, of Antigo passed away on Dec. 15, 2020 under the loving care of LeRoyer Hospice and the staff of Care Partners. Merv was born on Sept. 22, 1936, in Summit Lake to the late Irma and Charles Cross. He graduated from Antigo High School in 1954. After graduating high school, Merv enlisted in the United States Navy. He served from 1954-57 and was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Hutchinson, Kan.
