PIASA – Steve Wooley was surprised when Southwestern principal Mark Bearley took the microphone to address the crowd for a pregame presentation Friday night.
But the featured surprise for Wooley came when the presenters of the plaque walked into the gym. The longtime Piasa Birds athletics director and girls basketball coach was already wearing his game face for a key South Central Conference game with Pana. He should have been wearing his glasses.
“When they were coming through the door, I didn’t have my glasses on,” Wooley said. “I was kind of like, who in the hell is this? They said it was going to be a big surprise. And it was a huge shock. I still can’t believe they are here. This is great.” ....
