Judge denies businesses seeking block on COVID restrictions

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) A federal judge has determined that a group of businesses and political action committees that sought to block Oregon Gov. Kate Brown’s COVID-19 restrictions haven t shown enough evidence to prompt such a move.
The group which includes the Gresham restaurant Spud Monkey’s Bar and Grill, its owner Melissa Adams and political action committees Oregon Moms Union and Heart of Main Street filed a temporary restraining order against Brown on May 5, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported. The order protested the “unfair restrictions” they said the governor had put on businesses and public school children. ....

Gresham School Board candidate Joe Demers allegedly challenged Black man to step on neck during a dispute
A Gresham-Barlow School Board candidate allegedly laid on the ground and challenged a Black man to step on his neck in an apparent push back against police excessive force protests that came to the national forefront after the killing of George Floyd and subsequent guilty verdict for the police officer involved.
According to witnesses, the incident with Joe Demers took place during the Gresham Farmers Market Saturday, May 15, where he had set up to advocate for his candidacy.
Gresham Farmers Market officials said political booths are not allowed within the market, which is held at the Arts Plaza at Northeast Hood Avenue and Second Street in downtown Gresham. The Farmers Market leadership has asked Demers to stop setting up on Saturdays, but he refused. Other political candidates have similarly set up nearby the market. ....

A slew of new faces will join school boards in East Multnomah County in early returns.
Former Gresham Police Chief and state legislator Carla Piluso was winning her seat for re-election to the Gresham-Barlow School Board in early results Tuesday night, even though she dropped out of the race after her name was already on the ballot.
In the Centennial School District, newcomer Erica Fuller was ahead in a race for the seat held for nearly three decades by Rod Boettcher.
In the Gresham-Barlow School District four of the five seats up for grabs were contested races. ....

Missing Gresham girl safe at home
UPDATE: The 13-year-old girl who ran away from home has returned, police say.
The Gresham Police Department said Monday that the 13-year-old girl who ran away from home Saturday night has retutned home and is safe.
According to investigators, Torres left her home at 184th Avenue and East Burnside Street shortly after 11 p.m. on May 15.
They said Torres turned off her phone and deactivated social media accounts. Her friends told police they don t know where she is.
Investigators say Torres has made statements previously implying she may want to harm herself.
