Michaela Ahlberg: Building a compliance program amid an FCPA probe

By Julie DiMauro2021-04-06T15:49:00+01:00
“I developed a brand-new compliance program at a global business that was dusting itself off from foreign bribery resolutions, and yet I still felt like I didn’t and couldn’t do enough,” Michaela Ahlberg told the audience at Compliance Week’s “Financial Crimes Risks, Trends, and Proven Practices” virtual conference last week.
Ahlberg created a compliance program from scratch when she was hired in 2013 by Swedish telecommunications firm Telia (then known as TeliaSonera) following allegations of corruption in its foreign business dealings.
She gained unusually direct access to the board and involvement with the legal team as it negotiated with U.S. regulators in a case eventually settled by Telia with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Department of Justice (DOJ), plus Swedish authorities.

Why are anti-lockdown protests allowed to go ahead? Safety and charter rights, says head of city’s bylaw department
Brendan Adair says people have a right to protest peacefully, and the risk to a handful of officers from a large crowd can make direct intervention risky

The anti-lockdown protest staged March 20 and the upcoming one planned for March 27 has both angered many people and garnered support from many others.
Those who don’t support large public gatherings have expressed frustration and confusion as to why public health officials, city bylaw officers and police allow these events to occur when the large number of people they attract, particularly to the March 20 event that drew upwards of 200 people, are a clear violation of provisions under the Reopening Ontario Act.

'We may move to Red Zone': MLHU reports another daily spike in new COVID-19 cases

Card image cap

The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is reporting 54 new COVID-19 cases Friday as numbers continue to climb.
The rise in numbers means that the London region could very well move back into the red zone in the coming weeks as the level of new cases are in line with numbers last seen in mid-January.
"We may move to the red zone restrictions sometime soon, or even the grey zone," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Chris Mackie Thursday.
"I would put that a couple weeks out, but if cases accelerate it could be sooner."
The London region now has 6,772 cases, with 6,297 resolved and 185 deaths (none new) leaving 290 active cases.

Diners enjoying outdoor dining on the first weekend of Spring where Toronto restaurants are allow to offer outdoor dining with loosening restrictions under Ontario's grey lockdown in Toronto on March 21, 2021.
Outdoor dining is now permitted everywhere in Ontario, a move observers say gives restaurateurs a “light at the end of the tunnel.”
“It gets restaurants back in the business of directly serving people,” James Rilett, vice-president of Central Canada for Restaurants Canada, said in an interview on Monday.

The Ford government is making changes to the province’s COVID-19 framework which will allow restaurants in “Grey-Lockdown” to open for outdoor dining and introduce a loosening of restrictions for indoor dining across multiple levels.
The province says restaurants operating in “Red-Control” and “Orange-Restrict” will be able to open with 50 percent capacity and a maximum of 50 and 100 people indoors.
“The total occupancy cannot exceed 50 patrons in Red-Control and 100 patrons in Orange-Restrict,” said the government in a news release.

The Ontario government’s investment of more than $12 million in a new initiative to detect COVID-19 in wastewater is being hailed as a boost to help researchers deliver early warnings to municipalities before a spike in new cases occurs.

Toronto and Peel Region’s top doctors confirmed Wednesday they’re in active discussions with the province about keeping the public health units in lockdown but with modified restrictions that could permit outdoor dining and events as the weather improves in the coming weeks.
Dr. Lawrence Loh first made his comments this morning, advising residents that a decision has not been made at this time.
“On its own, the uptick in our current viral picture does not support for the re-opening at this time,” said Peel’s top doctor.

Plans underway but don’t expect games
By Brian Lockhart
The Ontario Provincial Football League is gearing up for the summer football season, however it may be a repeat of last year. In a statement issued by the League, they are still cautious about what might happen this summer.
“Over the course of the next few months, we will be closely monitoring new developments with a return to tackle football in mind and our planning teams will be planning for a fall season at all age divisions,” the league said.
Summer football traditionally gets underway on the May long weekend, however don’t expect to see the usual full-day of activities to kick off the season.

The Flint Jaguars basketball team in Flint, Michigan, United States, embodies efforts to nurture stability, encourage mutual support and strengthen community spirit in a city struggling to survive. Basketball is an integral part of Flint culture, and the city once produced dozens of big names at collegiate and professional levels. For decades, four high school teams battled as fierce rivals. Now there is only one high school in town. In 2020, the team fought to turn around what had up until then been a nearly winless history. By March, they were prepared to head to the division finals with an 18-4 record, having won more games in 2020 than in the previous three years combined. Their play-off run ended prematurely when COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the season.

WASHINGTON: The Army’s intelligence corps is embracing big data and artificial intelligence – but it has to balance that with preserving old school human skills at the same time, Lt. Gen. Laura Potter said Wednesday.
The intelligence force is furiously busy. It is creating new hybrid Intelligence/Electronic Warfare Battalions supporting Army divisions, meeting the unique intel needs of the new Multi-Domain Task Forces, and fielding the TITAN ground terminal and TLS signals intelligence/electronic warfare vehicle, said Potter, the service’s deputy chief of staff (G-2) for intelligence. But the impact of artificial intelligence is arguably the most fundamental change.
