BARRIE, ONT. The Simcoe Muskoka health unit reports 144 new COVID-19 cases since Friday and two more virus-related deaths. The numbers reported Monday show 77 cases in Barrie, 23 in Bradford, 11 in Innisfil, nine in New Tecumseth, eight in Penetanguishene, and four in Huntsville. Orillia, Wasaga Beach, Essa and Collingwood each had two cases, while single cases were reported in Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Tiny and Tay. The health unit reports a 30 per cent jump in COVID-19 cases for the week of Feb. 14 from the week prior. It lists 271 infections last week and 210 for the week of Feb. 7. No new variant cases were reported in the region over the weekend. There have been a total of 171 UK B-117 variant infections confirmed across Simcoe Muskoka, with 187 possible cases that require confirmatory testing. ....
BARRIE, ONT. The number of confirmed COVID-19 variant cases in Simcoe Muskoka nearly tripled in the past 24 hours, jumping from 19 to 51 on Tuesday. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) reports another 94 patients are waiting on a second test to confirm whether they too are infected with the variant. Health officials grow increasingly concerned, saying the U.K. variant is 50 per cent more contagious and it s able to find little holes in our armour, according to Dr. Colin Lee, SMDHU associate medical officer of health said Friday. The health unit says the deaths are associated with a devastating outbreak at a Barrie long-term care home. According to the health unit, eight senior s homes are dealing with COVID-19 outbreaks, including Roberta Place in Barrie. The long-term care facility s raging outbreak has claimed 49 lives and infected 127 residents and 96 staff members. The other outbreaks include Grove Park Home and IOOF in Barrie, Trillium Manor in Orillia, The Pines Long Term Care Residence in Bracebridge, Muskoka Shores Care Community in Gravenhurst, Kingsmere Retirement Living in Alliston, and Bradford Valley Care Community. ....
