The idled Belvidere Auto Assembly Plant could have new life under a new contract negotiated between Jeep maker Stellantis and the United Auto Workers (UAW) union.
On Aug. 17, a meeting was held by the Ogle County Economic Development Corporation, where the newly-established organization officially announced that it is open for business. The OCEDC is incorporated as a not-for-profit, representing all of Ogle County, its communities, employers and citizens.
The $1.2 billion, 1.2 million-square-foot hub will distribute products requiring cold storage to nearby Walmart stores and could create as many as 700 new jobs over the next five years.
The pause of the Stellantis plant meant a loss of over 1,000 employees for Belvidere and the region. Some small businesses say it may be too early to tell how it may affect their business, while others are feeling a drastic cut in their bottom line.
Oscar Mike, a non-profit veterans support organization, is looking to open a new, multi-million-dollar facility in the Rockford area.
