Yinka Shonibare, an art icon with a sardonic twist

Last month, figures from across the international art world appeared on screen at the Whitechapel Gallery’s virtual gala to celebrate Yinka Shonibare CBE (RA), their designated “art icon” for 2021. The “i-word” can have cringeworthy connotations, but in this case, no one felt it was too hyperbolic a handle for this much-loved pioneering artist, who for more than three decades, has used his multifarious art to address the vexed legacy of colonialism, a quest that has never been more relevant than in the current moment. Shonibare is also a shining example of philanthropy, funding ambitious, creative residency projects in both London and Lagos, and now, as the recently appointed coordinator of the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, he is set to shake up that most traditional bastion of white Western art traditions. ....

CHRISTINE FERGUSON is a Professor in English Literature at the University of Stirling, where her research focuses on the entwined histories of the literary gothic and the British occult revival in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Her publications include the books Determined Spirits: Eugenics, Heredity, and Racial Regeneration in Angl0-American Spiritualist Writing 1848-1930 (2012) and Language, Science, and Popular Fiction in the Victorian Fin de Siècle (2006); she is the editor of Spiritualism, Health, Race, and Human Variation (2014), a volume in Routledge’s Spiritualism 1840-1930 facsimile edition series, and, with Andrew Radford, The Occult Imagination in Britain, 1875-1947 (forthcoming 2018). She is currently at work on a new project on the popular fiction networks and periodical culture of the Victorian occult revival. ....

.-Whitechapel Gallery announced that Yinka Shonibare CBE RA (b. 1962, UK) is the eighth artist to receive the prestigious annual Art Icon award, generously supported by the Swarovski Foundation. On Monday 22 March 2021, the award will be presented during a virtual gala celebration hosted by Iwona Blazwick OBE (Director, Whitechapel Gallery), and feature an exclusive musical performance from four-time Grammy Award winner Angélique Kidjo. To protect the safety and welfare of all attendees, the event will be hosted on a digital platform and will celebrate the Gallery’s continued commitment to youth programmes and educational activities through an evening of live presentations. ....
