IN the midst of their long and harrowing ordeal, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel for those affected by the Gujjar and Orangi nullah encroachment operations in Karachi. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah announced at a press conference on Friday that the provincial government had decided to allot 80 square yard plots to the 6,500 families displaced as a result of the massive exercise. To that end, he said that the Supreme Court would be approached to provide Rs10bn out of the funds being recovered from Bahria Town on account of the land development firm’s settlement dues. Anti-encroachment operation continues in parts of Karachi

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation continued operations against encroachments in various parts of the city on Saturday.
According to details shared by the corporation’s anti-encroachment director Bashir Siddiqui, the anti-encroachment operation is under way in all the seven districts of the city on the directions of the Supreme Court.
The anti-encroachment operations, he explained, were being carried out along several storm water drains of the city.
In District Central, the operation is being held at 10 different spots along the mighty Gujjar Nullah, he said, adding that in District West and District Keamari, encroachments were being removed along the second biggest drain of the city, Orangi Nullah. ....

Leaders of the Karachi Bachao Tehreek (KBT) on Friday demanded that the Sindh government include people affected by the anti-encroachment operations of the Gujjar and Orangi nullahs, Haji Lemu Goth, Sahafi Colony, Aladin Park and Karachi Circular Railway in the commission to resolve the issue of unauthorised constructions in the city.
They also demanded that each affected family be provided compensation according to their land and construction, not just 80-square-yard plots. KBT leader Khurram Ali and others addressed a press conference at the Karachi Press Club in response to the Sindh government’s announcement of forming a commission for allotting alternative plots to the affected people. ....

Sindh govt to allot plots to displaced people of Gujjar, Orangi Nullahs: CM Murad Ali Shah

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that on directives from Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the provincial government has decided to allot 80 square yards plots to all the 6,500 families displaced in an ongoing operation to remove encroachments from along the embankments of the Gujjar and Orangi storm water drains.
“Since the affected people too poor to construct their houses, we would like to request the Supreme Court of Pakistan to provide Rs10 billion being recovered from Bahria Town to spend on the construction of over 6,500 houses, development of road, drainage and water supply infrastructure in the Malir district and to construct a drainage system on the left bank of the River Indus,” he said while addressing a press conference at the CM House. ....
