we need to do a better job finding the right balance of how much sugar we all consume. but why is it so hard for kids in particular to lay off the sweet stuff? new research may have the answer. our national correspondent kate snow reports. >> reporter: any parent will tell you kids love sweets. >> she will ask constantly for any kind of sweet. >> reporter: and the problem for parents is kids don't just like sugar. >> ya, ya, ya, ya, ya. >> reporter: they're biologically hardwired for it according to scientist julie mennella. >> during periods of growth they're attracted to foods that give us calories. in the past it was fruit, honey. now children are living in environments where sugar's everywhere. >> ha, ha! >> reporter: mennella heads a lab in philadelphia where they test kids like 8-year-old jacob and 5-year-old sasha giving them sugar solutions to see how sweet they like things. like a lot of adults my preference was about the same amount of sugar as soda. it wasn't the one kids like. >> let me try yours.
