By Jenny Callison, posted Mar 11, 2021 The full-throttle film production happening in Wilmington at present is estimated to total about $114.5 million in local spending for goods and services, according to the N.C. Dept. of Commerce. In return, the four projects involved will receive nearly $28.4 million in rebates from the state’s film incentive fund.
This healthy bottom line reflects the boom in film activity that started here in the early fall of 2020 and continues, even as one project has wrapped, the other three wind down, and a new one is in pre-production at EUE/Screen Gems Studios. The state is now seeing an uptick in the number of production companies looking to shoot films right here in our area. The move comes after North Carolina experienced a dramatic slump in 2015. The year prior, the state ended incentives that lured movie production companies here. North Carolina replaced those tax incentives with grants which topped out at 10 million dollars. In 2019, the state began to rebound, and once again saw an increase in movie productions. But, the pandemic forced productions to shut down for six months in 2020. And, now with safety protocols in place, the cameras are rolling once again. ....
