Over a dozen people came out in Inuvik on Wednesday night. Some people asked about historical cases of missing persons and how far back the legislature would allow RCMP to investigate.
The Missing Persons Act would allow RCMP to access additional records of the missing person to assist in the investigation. Justice Minister R.J. Simpson read the bill for the second time in the legislature Monday.
Nunakput MLA Jackie Jacobson pleaded in the N.W.T. Legislature Tuesday that everything possible be done in the search for Frank Gruben, the Gwich'in Inuvialuit man last seen in Fort Smith in early May.
Chief Supt. Sydney Lecky says police continue to investigate but many leads have been "exhausted". Looking ahead, he said he'd like to have more Indigenous officers and language speakers overall.
Frank Gruben has been missing from Fort Smith, N.W.T., for more than a month and police say their search is stymied without missing persons legislation. An Ontario MPP who pushed for that province's version of the law says the N.W.T. doesn't need to reinvent the wheel to get it done.
