Mecklenburg County commissioners approve budget, CMS restriction


Below are details of the $56 million allocated to CMS:
$56 million is conditionally allocated to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and can be expended once the district provides an educational attainment plan to the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners that articulates the district’s plan for the spending of County dollars to address gaps in educational attainment. The plan should include quantifiable goals, strategies, targets, and timeframes to:
Improve the performance of the 42 low performing schools within the school district
Improve performance scores and grades for all individual disaggregated subgroups including economically disadvantaged students and students from major racial and ethnic groups
Ensure that that at least 75% of students within all demographic subgroups graduate with at least one State endorsement by the end of the 2024 school year ....

Mecklenburg Budget Has $2.5M To Help Salvation Army Purchase Hotel

Buying a hotel would help the Salvation Army expand the shelter services now housed in its Charlotte Center of Hope.
Mecklenburg County s proposed budget for the new fiscal year includes $12 million for a variety of housing and homelessness programs. That includes $2.5 million to help the Salvation Army buy a hotel and convert it into a homeless shelter.
The money in County Manager Dena Diorio s proposed 2021-22 budget would match a $2.5 million grant
by the city of Charlotte last month. Diorio also wants to give the Salvation Army $512,000 for operating expenses at the new shelter.
Homelessness in our community is not something that can be solved by one organization or government entity. It is a collaborative effort, requiring us all to work together to solve our community’s most complicated challenges, the Salvation Army said in a statement. ....
