hours. right now, we are watching severe thunderstorms that have been moving across parts of missouri through the st. louis area and to the east now. these have been hail makers. they have a history of producing golf ball size hail. this is kind of a warmup compared to what we are expecting. the bright red area, we have a moderate risk of tornadoes. a watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather to occur. a warning means you need to be taking cover right away. >> we hear you. we told you the president will speak around 10:15 a.m. eastern this morning. mr. obama is starting his three-day debt and taxes tour in virginia. that would be no accident. our deputy political director, paul steinhauser, is here to explain location, location,
million acres already. dozens of fires are burning right now. one firefighter has died. they are running out of resources and the governor wants the entire state to be declared a federal disaster area. extreme weather happening right now in northern new jersey as well. take a look at this mess. powerful storms dumped more than four inches of rain on some areas, causing rivers to swell, roads look more like lakes this morning. hundreds of homes are damaged. many residents forced to evacuate. others needed to be rescued by boat. officials say more flooding may be on the way in some parts, but they do expect the rivers to recede some time today. there's been an awful lot of rain soaking that part of the country. it's very, very dry in texas. kiran was pointing out people who want the rain don't have it. people who don't need the rain are getting too much. word of severe weather in the st. louis area. happening right now, jacqui jeras in atlanta for us. good morning. >> good morning. we have some incredible hail makers right now. just outside of the city. this is st. louis county, into
weather center. >> quite the outbreak on monday. yesterday not quite so bad. we had a couple of hail makers. today the severe weather threat is amplified more. and we're seeing strong to severe thunderstorms across the mississippi river valley. those heavy thunderstorms moving across the st. louis area. they are training through here. you probably woke up early because of the thunder and lightning and flash flooding could be expected as well. northeast dealing with light rain and cool temperatures. we could see thunderstorms redeveloping later on this afternoon. we'll talk about the severe weather threat in the plains later on "american morning." >> well, the oil spill is turning into an economic disaster as well. we're live in mississippi where the owners of one seafood plant had to deliver terrible news. live in just a moment. i'd like one of those desserts and some coffee.

the atmosphere and stay on the ground for a very long period of time. out in the plains where everything is flat, you can get pictures like this because you can see for miles and miles. today we have a severe weather threat again. hopefully we won't be seeing more pictures like these. we do expect to see things firing up this afternoon and evening again. this time into western oklahoma and panhandle of texas. we'll also be watching parts of kansas and central parts of missouri. we could see twisters today but don't expect to see nearly as many. we also expect to see quite a few hail makers. we do have the remnants of that storm system in the plains, made its way across the upper midwest. nothing severe with this weather here today. from minneapolis through chicago down towards cincinnati. that will move into the northeast. we have another piece of energy coming into the plains this afternoon. it's the dry line, hot air blowing off the desert meets up
[ male announcer ] the volkswagen cc. award-winning design starting under $28,000. it's a whole new volkswagen, and a whole new game. time to check on this morning's weather headlines. jacqui jeras is in the weather center. some areas hit yesterday could again get a storm system passing through? >> absolutely. we do have the severe weather threat again. it won't be nearly as widespread and we don't expect nearly as many violent tornadoes. but a few could spin up as well as hail makers. and wul watch parts of texas and oklahoma into kansas as well as into the nation's midsection. but the main energy is pulled up
there is a 2% chance of tornadoes here today compared with a 1-4 chance yesterday. there will be some rotation likely. we will also see some hail makers. again, this won't be developing until later on today. what happened yesterday, a very dynamic situation. check out these pictures we have from storm spotters of the tornado. this was in north central oklahoma near medford. there you can see multiple vortices. they tend to happen because of the air incoming as well as a little bit of friction. this is a lot of reasons why sometimes we will see one house which is destroyed and one standing next to it that isn't. so these were very classic looking supercells. very violent day yesterday. today, we will have to watch out for more. hopefully, not as bad. >> we will watch it together. thanks so much sfwlchlt. >> finger pointing and grilling, executives from b.p., trans
in choctaw, mark hopgrande. we think this will start firing up late this afternoon and into this evening. we have a slight risk of severe thunderstorms. more into western parts of oklahoma, the panhandle of texas and kansas. we are not expecting widespread outbreaks with a lot of supercell tornadoes. we could see a couple of rotators as well as some large hail makers. let's show you some video and talk about how unique yesterday was. it was a high-risk day where you get the individual storms that stand out there all by themselves and take up all the energy. this video you are looking at, you can see this tornado in medford had multiple vortices.
panhandle of texas. check out the pictures that we have for you from bushland, text, yesterday. you can clearly see that funnel from kmmr. it touched down but no damage no, injuries. those are the kind of tornadoes we like to hear about. there were only two touchdowns, we think it was probably from the same parent cell. but it happened to get caught on tape. now, we could see more tornadoes potentially late this afternoon and this evening. but i think we'll have a greater chance of maybe getting some hail makers as well as damaging winds. that severe weather threat is in the same spot today across the panhandle of texas as well as oklahoma and then stretching into the plains there of colorado. and now, as we advance through the week, we're going to start to see those chances of severe weather increase. starting with tomorrow our low pressure area comes out of the west and the pacific and it starts to tap into some of this moisture from the gulf of mexico. that's one of the key ingredients needed to get this show on the road, so to speak. greater chance and broader area as well from kansas stretching
