A one dollar increase in Columbus Junction’s solid waste/recycling fee was finalized Wednesday by the city council.

After more than 50 years of being family-operated, a Columbus Junction trash-collecting business has been sold to Iowa River Sanitation LLC. A representative for the company said the change may bring lower rates.

Spectra Build of Wapello provided the low bid of $1.5 million on the project, which will include construction of a direct discharge pipe to the Iowa River, a lift station and an UV disinfection station.

The money represents the city’s contribution to the pool and classifying the funds as admissions protected the school district’s Public Education and Recreation Levy.

The line of credit is needed because insurance reimbursements to the Louisa County Ambulance Service have been delayed since the non-profit service transitioned to city ownership on Jan. 1.
