More than $525,000 in scholarships and monetary awards was awarded to Fairfield Community High School seniors yesterday at their annual awards event. Alexis Thomason, Trenton Jones, Haley Dozier, Konnor Dagg, and Hunter Biggs were recognized with Illinois State Scholar Awards, and Dagg and Elaina Kunce won the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete awards. Chris Henry, Ryland Thomason, Parker Richardson, and Blaine Milner were recognized for their plans to enter the National Guard, and Remington Wheeler was recognized for plans to enter the Army. The Fairfield City Council will meet tonight at City Hall. The night will begin with a public hearing at 5:30 to discuss the proposed business district in the city, but no action will be taken on the matter tonight by the council. Mayor Mike Dreith says he will likely begin the hearing with a brief explanation of the district before allowing any attendees to briefly speak their minds. Appearing on the Community Connection, he also spoke on the second big item on the agenda in the potential naming of a replacement for Brett Coale, who stepped away from the council last month. The mayor has nominated Cody Attebery to replace him, citing, in part, the fact he lost in a very close race to Dewey Eckleberry in the last election. In other action at tonight's Fairfield council meeting, aldermen are anticipated to vote on beginning the process to change utility collection dates. The Edwards County Health Office announced 30 new cases of COVID-19 in the past week, bringing its total to 1,173; 21 cases were in unvaccinated individuals. Wabash County announced 24 cases in the past week to reach 2,254 cases; 22 people were in isolation. Hamilton County added seven cases yesterday and sat at 1,384; one person was hospitalized, and 19 were in isolation. White County added three to reach 3,141, and Jefferson County reported nine. The state Department of Public Health announced 6,119 new cases yesterday and 45 additional deaths. Statewide totals sat at 1,815,994 cases and 26,459 deaths. The Southern Region had a seven-day positivity rate of 4.7 percent on the 28th, down from five percent on the 27th. Currently the State of Illinois is reporting a total of 1,815,994 cases of COVID-19 in the state, with 30,274 variant cases. Dr. William Heard Kilpatrick died March 4, 2021 after a prolonged respiratory illness. Dr. Kilpatrick was preceded in death by his parents, the Reverend Ebb G. Kilpatrick, Sr. and Lillie W. Kilpatrick; older brother, Reverend Ebb G. Kilpatrick, Jr.; and granddaughter, Meg Watson.
Dr. Kilpatrick was born on November 25, 1932 in Louisville, Kentucky where his father was a student at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. The family location changed often during those times and included Carrollton, Commerce and Atlanta.
Dr. Kilpatrick’s college was at Mercer University and medical education at the Medical College of Georgia, and OB-GYN training at Grady Memorial Hospital of Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Kilpatrick entered the private practice of OB-GYN at South Fulton Hospital in East Point, Georgia in 1964. ....

The Wayne County Health Department will offer four remote COVID-19 vaccination clinics tomorrow for people in Phases 1A, 1B, and 1B Part Two of the vaccine rollout. 50 doses will be given per site, and clinics will be held at the Mt. 43-year-old Fairfield resident Jason P. Nelson was sentenced in Wayne County Circuit Court yesterday. He pleaded guilty in December to a count of domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.
