Four civilians, including a couple who tried to save fallen Weymouth police Sgt. Michael Chesna, also received special recognition during the ceremony.
Nine officers from the Boston, Worcester, and Revere police departments were honored Tuesday during the 40th annual Trooper George L. Hanna Memorial Awards for bravery during a ceremony in Worcester, according to the state Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.
This year's group of honorees included a Worcester police officer who died while trying to save a drowning victim and a retired state trooper who was killed by a gunman.
There were 32 recipients of the annual George L. Hanna Memorial Award for Bravery, named after a state trooper shot and killed during a traffic stop in 1983.
