Zimbabwean sculptor David Ngwerume will tell you that his country has beautiful stones. “I’m taking advantage of that beauty to capture the world’s attention,” the 40-year-old says.

David Ngwerume gestures to his garden, in a leafy Harare suburb, where his latest creations stand beneath the boughs of shady trees.
“Most of these stones that you see as sculptures are found along mineral belts and some of them are mineral ores,” he says.
Take black springstone, a hard serpentine rock that is rich in iron. It polishes to a beautiful black and is the stone from which he created “Arms”, one of a series of Covid-19 themed sculptures that has taken Zimbabwean social media ....

COVID-19 surge in Zimbabwe leads to death of four government Cabinet members

A new wave of the coronavirus in Zimbabwe has killed four of the southern African nation’s Cabinet ministers as of Sunday, the Associated Press reported.
Cabinet members killed by the virus include the nation’s transport and foreign ministers, according to the AP. In televised remarks, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the virus has “been indiscriminate” among Zimbabweans.
“There are no spectators, adjudicators, no holier than thou. No supermen or superwomen. We are all exposed,” he said, according to the AP.

Much of the continent saw low numbers early in the pandemic as rates spiked across Europe and North America. However, several nations, including Zimbabwe, have seen a spike in cases in recent months. A more infectious strain believing to have originated in South Africa is of particular concern in Zimbabwe, where thousands of Zimbabwean residents of South Africa recently returned home. ....
