TRIBUTES have been paid to the much-loved and well-known chair of Harlawhill Day Centre following her passing on Monday. Jean Thomson, 80, had been chair of the centre on Prestonpans’ East Loan for nearly 30 years, being on the steering group a year before its doors opened in 1992. Jean, who was born in Prestonpans but lived in Musselburgh, consistently and freely gave her time and effort to support Harlawhill. The mum-of-two, a trained speech therapist, contributed significantly to the development of the centre and helped “turn it into the wonderful place it is today”, said its manager Fiona Mitchell. Fiona said that there was “no one more unique and inspirational than Jean Thomson” and described her as her “Harlawhill mum”. ....
CHILDREN have brought smiles to the faces of the elderly by writing more than 150 Valentine’s Day cards for Harlawhill Day Care Centre members. Staff at the Prestonpans centre, who have been supporting members stuck at home during lockdown, sent out an appeal on social media for youngsters to send Valentine’s cards to their clients. Children from Camperdown Nursery and Preston Lodge High School were among the participants sending in artwork. Sarah Morrison, the mother of eight-year-old Valentine’s Day card creator Abbie, said that Harlawhill Day Centre had always been a massive part of the Prestonpans community. She said: “We often see Facebook posts about the work that Harlawhill do for the elderly and how happy it makes the members. ....
THE power of love is radiating throughout East Lothian thanks to Prestonpans’ Harlawhill Day Centre, writes Caitlin Johnston. The centre has launched a campaign to combat loneliness by encouraging school children to create Valentine’s Day cards for their elderly members. The centre is closed to clients due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions, but staff are in regular contact with their members. Fiona Mitchell, Harlawhill Day Centre manager, said that contact with local school children was a massive part of Harlawhill life before lockdown and this new project would strengthen its intergenerational work. She added: “Before Christmas, we had the primary school write letters to all of our members: it was lovely and the response from our members was heart-warming; they felt really touched that somebody had written them a beautiful letter. ....
