The fields are set for the Oct. 9 election in which voters will decide on who fills two seats held by longtime Rapides Parish politicians. One is the Rapides Parish Police Jury District I seat, which became vacant when Scott Perry died in January. His wife, Doris Perry, was appointed to fill the vacancy, but she did not qualify to run for the seat. Democrats Jay Scott and June Johnson Davis will face off for the seat. Town Talk staff reports Alexandria will celebrate Independence Day Sunday at the Alexandria Riverfront Amphitheater with fireworks over the Red River. Following the City Council’s decision Tuesday night to vote against a city-sponsored July 4th fireworks show, councilmen Lee Rubin, Chuck Fowler and Jim Villard as well as Mayor Jeff Hall spearheaded a drive to raise funds to sponsor the event. Rubin, Fowler and Villard voted for the fireworks show.  “We all thought it was important to the quality of life in Alexandria to have a celebration for the city. The Alexandria City Council this week appointed an interim member to replace Harry Silver and also set a public hearing on condemning 26 houses. Council members voted unanimously to appoint attorney Catherine Davidson to the District 4 seat, vacated when former Councilman Harry Silver announced his resignation that took effect Feb. 28. A special election to fill the seat is expected later this year. Davidson, who ran unsuccessfully in 2018 for mayor, and another attorney, Maria Losavio, were nominated for the interim spot.
