2023 must birth new federation — Obasanjo

“I do believe that whatever else we do we have to make the year 2023 a watershed for Nigeria. The year 2023 should give us the beginning of the emergence of a new federation or failing that, and the rot continues, then we are going to be sliding back to ground dissolution. God forbid,” he said.
Obasanjo expressed fear that those beating drums of division in Nigeria don’t think about the interest of the minority ethnic groups.
“And he would say to me if the Yorubas can stand as a country, if the Igbos can stand as a country, if the Hausas/Fulanis can stand as a country, if you major tribes decide to break up from the country, where do you want the minority ethnic groups to stand. That, many Nigerians don’t know about, unfortunately.

If Nigeria breaks up, minority groups will suffer - Obasanjo kicks against secession

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has disagreed with those calling for the division of Nigeria, asking what would be the fate of minority ethnic groups in the nation.
Obasanjo spoke at his Penthouse residence, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, when he played host to members of Tiv professionals Group (TPG) led by Prof Zacharys Anger Gundu.
According to Obasanjo, secessionists in the country have failed to take account of the fact that there are many minority groups in Nigeria.
He said if the likes of Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa/Fulani ethnic groups stand alone, the minority groups may be oppressed as they would turn out to be smaller countries.

Following the crisis that broke out in the ancient city of Ikare-Akoko, headquarters of Akoko North East Local Government, Governor Okuwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has imposed a 24-hour curfew on the community.
The move by the governor was made known following the killings and destruction of property by some youths in the community over the Olokoja Chieftaincy stool.
According to a statement by the state government, which was signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, the curfew takes effect from 6.00pm on Wednesday, May 5, 2021.
Ojogo emphasized that security operatives had been deployed to the community with a mandate by the state government to enforce the curfew.

Minority groups will be oppressed if Nigeria breaks up, Obasanjo warns secession agitators

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on the groups pushing for the break-up of Nigeria to consider that minority ethnic groups would be oppressed if their agitations came through.
Obasanjo spoke on the subject while receiving members of Tiv Professionals Group at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Wednesday.
While relaying the position of a military friend of his, Obasanjo expressed fears that those beating drums of division in the country do not have the interest of the minority ethnic groups at heart.
“And he (military friend) would say to me if the Yorubas can stand as a country if the Igbos can stand as a country if the Hausas/Fulanis can stand as a country if you major tribes decide to break up from the country, where do you want the minority ethnic groups to stand? That, many Nigerians don’t know about, unfortunately,” the former Commander-in-Chief said.
