For roughly the past year, Republicans and Democrats have picked apart the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic — and particularly how Gov. Greg Abbott has wielded his power along the way.
Now, with less than 90 days left in the 2021 regular legislative session and as Abbott has moved to lift most of the restrictions he imposed, the Texas Legislature is setting its sights on addressing the governor’s emergency powers during a pandemic. And while many differences remain on the approach, members of both parties and both chambers of the Legislature appear intent on doing something.
In the House, a top lieutenant of GOP Speaker Dade Phelan has filed a wide-ranging bill that would affirm the governor’s ability to suspend state laws and require local jurisdictions to get approval from the secretary of state before altering voting procedures during a pandemic, among other things. The city posits that workforce housing away from city centers can do more harm than good.
Though Wilsonville City Council has identified fostering affordable housing as one of its primary priorities and recently approved a roadmap to do so, the local government s stance on a new bill at the Oregon Legislature provides a window into where it believes such development should go and where it shouldn t.
House Bill 3072 stipulates that planning authorities may amend an urban growth boundary upon a petition from a developer offering to produce housing that is affordable to moderate or low-income households (called workforce housing) or commercial buildings that support housing in areas currently zoned as urban reserves (which is land just outside of the UGB that may be considered for development in the next 50 years). Proposed bills would restrict towing sports, including in the popular Newberg Pool section of the river
Oregon House Bill 2555 is directly tied to a 20-mile stretch of the Willamette River, but if passed, its ripple effects could be felt as far as Hagg Lake in rural Washington County.
The proposed legislation is aimed at the Newberg Pool and would restrict towing people on wakeboards, wake surfers and inner tubes to name a few to boats not exceeding 4,000 pounds.
The Newberg Pool is the part of the Willamette River roughly between Newberg and Willamette Falls in Oregon City. It is a popular place for area boaters. ....

Letter to the Editor: Lawmakers need to act on behalf of, not against, LGBTQ West Virginians


Dear Editor:
Each year in the West Virginia legislature, a number of discriminatory bills are proposed against entire segments of the state’s citizenry. WV has seen a steady decline in the overall population, losing nearly seven percent over the last forty years. Why, then, are legislators trying to decrease the population even more by discriminating against the nearly 58,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) adults and 10,000+ LGBTQ youth? With an already struggling economy, it is quite telling that legislators continue to propose bills that make it difficult for LGBTQ West Virginians to meet their basic needs. This leads many to flee to other states for better opportunities and outcomes.  ....
