An April 24 fire at Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation destroyed an eight-unit complex, which housed 31 people according to a news release put out by the First Nation.
It is part of a $100 million investment by the government over five years (since 2018) to “support Indigenous groups’ efforts towards developing their own path to reconstituting their nations,” according to the government’s news release. The compensation is as a result of “breach of Crown fiduciary duty arising in 1905 out of a surrender of lands from Indian Reserve No. 110/111 (IR 110/111)” according to the decision of the Specific Claims Tribunal. The surrendered land consists of a parcel of 14,670-acres, or approximately two-thirds of the reserve.
