Holyoke City Treasurer Sandra Smith tenders resignation ‘with heavy heart’ Updated Jan 30, 2021; Facebook Share HOLYOKE City Treasurer Sandra Smith notified Mayor Alex B. Morse she would resign her position Feb. 26. “With a heavy heart and some serious soul searching,” Smith said she would not finish her current, four-year term. Smith said the office had taken a toll on her health, and retirement seemed the best option. In 2010, City Treasurer Jon Lumbra appointed Smith assistant treasurer, which she held for five years. “We immediately got to work addressing the major past audit issues that were present in the office and successfully worked together to create a solid team that made the office more efficient and fiscally responsible,” Smith stated. ....

In November, Marrero announced he would resign his post in the Planning Department effective Jan. 22. Outgoing state Rep. Aaron Vega, D-Holyoke, was named Marrero’s replacement shortly after that. Vega’s fourth and final term ends in the coming days. Patricia Duffy, Vega’s legislative aide, easily won the 5th Hamden District House seat during the September Democratic primary and ran unopposed in the November general election. ....
Holyoke Ordinance Committee OKs raise for Reserve Police Officers Updated Dec 24, 2020; HOLYOKE – The City Council’s Ordinance Committee voted 5-0 to raise the hourly rate for Reserve Police Officers. The committee held a virtual session Tuesday night. Councilor Peter Tallman filed an order to increase the current $14.95 for reserve police officers, who supplement regular policing in the city. The committee voted on an $18 hourly rate for the current fiscal year. Councilor Joseph M. McGiverin said reserve officers “essentially” act as regular officers who are waiting for openings on the Holyoke Police Department. “While they’re waiting, they’re called upon to work on a per diem basis, doing the same jobs as the police officers next to them in the line of fire,” he said. “The current salary of $14.95 is way too low to ask someone to put a gun on and go out to the streets and perform those duties.” ....
