Walmart Donates $14M to 'Help Advance Racial Equity'

George Floyd.
A press release on its corporate website noted that the money will fund a wide range of initiatives, with $1 million to reduce student loan debt of HBCU seniors, $5 million to heart-healthy programs in Black communities, and $2.7 million going to COVID-19 vaccine awareness.
“Walmart has made a commitment to advancing racial equity, finding areas where we, as a company, can best contribute our resources and expertise to change society’s systems that perpetuate racism and discrimination,” said Kirstie Sims, senior director of the Walmart.org Center for Racial Equity. “We are excited to announce our initial investment to these deserving nonprofits that help advance racial equity through their organizations every day.”

North Charleston High School Principal Takes Job Stocking Shelves at Walmart to Help Students in Need

The South Carolina principal started working there in August to help low-income students and their families.
Many students at his school live in poverty, Darby told
The Post & Courier. "I decided to get another job because the kids, they really need help," he explained.
According to the S.C. Department of Education, nearly 90 percent of North Charleston High students lived in poverty last year.
So far Darby has donated more than $2,500—about half of his Walmart earnings—to families in need. He plans to donate the rest after taxes are due.
Darby, who is also a longtime county councilman, was born and raised in the Liberty Hill community and has witnessed the suffering caused by poverty first-hand. Ever since he was a teenager, Darby has worked three or four jobs.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — After four people were killed and dozens were arrested at a mob Wednesday in Washington, D.C., leaders from Baltimore County Public Schools encouraged both families and educators be open to discussing the matter with students.
Superintendent Darryl Williams and Board Chair Makeda Scott said people should "make space for students to talk about and process the mob attack on the Capitol," in a letter issued Thursday.
