The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge celebrated its 50th anniversary on Thursday. The nearly 1000-acre reserve in Tinicum provides more than 10 miles of trails and a free venue for boating, hiking and fishing. A generation of Philadelphia environmentalists fought to protect the preserve as planners sought to build on it in the 20th century.
