Blackburn Rovers pioneers paid a heavy price on the pitch
FOOTBALL was harder in the old days! It’s a moan you hear a lot these days. Today’s very well-paid “stars” seem to fall down writhing in agony right, left and centre from the gentlest of taps. An elbow in the back and it’s a job for the team doctor. I was reading about the early days of Blackburn Rovers over the recent break and was horrified at a report of a Lancashire Cup match away to Edinburgh Hibernian in the 1880-81 season, not long after the Rovers were formed at a meeting in the St Leger Hotel on King William Street, Blackburn.
