Cincinnati mayoral primary results: Aftab Pureval, David Mann, Cecil Thomas lead

Voters in the city's nonpartisan primary were picking two finalists for mayor who will face off against each other in November. All but independent Najoli are Democrats.
The candidates fanned out across the city Tuesday, braving torrential downpours at times, in an effort to talk to voters.
The men are aiming for the city's top job, which pays $131,000 a year. This election comes in the wake of four council members over the last 14 months being arrested on corruption allegations.
Term limits prevent Mayor John Cranley from running again, and of the council members elected in 2017 only Greg Landsman can run for re-election.

Pureval, Mann Survive Mayoral Primary; Will Face Off In November

1:02
The mayor's race to come this fall will be a contest of contrasts – Pureval, the energetic 38-year-old who burst on the scene as a rock star candidate for clerk of courts and carried that charisma over into a losing campaign for Congress in 2018; versus Mann, an 81-year-old veteran of six decades in politics, a man who has been there and done that in nearly every aspect of city government.
"You know, the city of Cincinnati is a tremendously complicated enterprise," Mann tells WVXU. "It's got over 6,000 employees, it spends $1.5 billion a year, we have 17 departments that provide an important range of services to our citizens. And I've been in the ring. And I think that's important in terms of knowing just how to operate and direct and lead as mayor. So I've got a tremendous advantage. And I can be a very effective mayor from day one."

Polls open today for 2021 primary election, voters narrow down Mayoral candidates

Tuesday is the May primary election, and turnout has already been significantly higher than four years ago.Cincinnati's mayoral race is bringing out more people, and issue three, the affordable housing issue, is also a contributing factor. In 2017, there were 4,400 early votes. This time there were 7,500.“People are taking more of an interest in control, in their lives and voting is one way to do it. One could also think its because people are at home and are thinking about elections, but I hope its because people are taking our democracy seriously,” said Sally Krisel, deputy director of the Hamilton County Board of Elections. Cincinnati voters will pick two mayoral candidates and discard four. The candidates: Gavi Begtrup, a scientist, business owner and former policy advisor for U.S. representative Gabby Giffords.David Mann is an attorney and current council member. He was a former congressman and has served twice as mayor.Herman Najoli is an educator and author, a soccer, basketball and track coach, and last year, a candidate for Hamilton County commissioner.Raffel Prophett is a retired Cincinnati fire district chief and a retired lieutenant colonel from the Army Reserves. He is co-founder of Public Medical, a group working to transform public safety and community health systems.Aftab Pureval is currently the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts. He is a former federal prosecutor and in-house counsel at Proctor and Gamble.Cecil Thomas currently serves as an Ohio state senator. He's a former Cincinnati councilman, a former human relations director and a retired Cincinnati police officerFour years ago, primary turnout was 11%, and eight years ago it was 5%.This time, Hamilton County predicts it could reach 20%.But even still, 80% of people are predicted not to vote at all, leaving big decisions up to just a small minority. Local polling places are open all day, from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.To find the location closest to you, or to check out a sample ballot click here.
