Mottley issues rallying call against antimicrobial resistance

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has called on all global leaders to be champions in the fight against Antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Mottley, who co-chairs the Global Leaders Group on AMR, made the call today as she virtually addressed the United Nations General Assembly’s High-Level Interactive Dialogue on AMR.
Describing AMR as a slow motion pandemic, the Prime Minister said it threatened to reverse a century of medical progress. She told her audience: “The challenges of antimicrobial resistance are complex and multifaceted, but they are not insurmountable if we act with solidarity and commitment today.”
She noted that although countries had experienced the health, social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, leaders were also now presented with an opportunity to address the issue of antimicrobial resistance, which threatens to be the greatest killer of human beings by the year 2050. ....

29 April 2021, Rome/New York – Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is becoming an increasing threat to global health, food safety and security, potentially also leading to substantial socio-economic damage, and to turn this around, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), QU Dongyu, today called for coherent, swift and decisive action.
Qu spoke at the day-long High-Level Interactive Dialogue of the General Assembly on AMR, which saw the participation of world leaders, UN experts, business and civil society leaders to discuss practical steps to address AMR in the midst of COVID-19 recovery plans. ....

DHAKA, April 29, 2021 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today unveiled a five-point “action plan” to effectively fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR), saying that failure to tackle this hazard may cause even more lethal pandemics in future.
“The world is now witnessing the devastating Covid-19 pandemic and the AMR may cause even more lethal pandemics in future,” she said while delivering her recorded statement broadcast at a High-level Interactive Dialogue on AMR in New York, the USA.
The premier added: “Failure to tackle this hazard in time will result in huge loss of human lives, animals, and plants.” ....
