Alex Fischer leaving Columbus Partnership Jan. 1; Kenny McDonald will become CEO


The leader of Columbus’ most powerful civic and business organization will step down at the end of the year, saying he’s ready to explore what’s next in his career and life.
Alex Fischer, who joined the Columbus Partnership as CEO in 2009 to rally the city’s business leaders to work collaboratively for the good of the region, will continue in his role until Jan. 1. He’ll be succeeded by a leader who’s worked by his side the past 11 years: Kenny McDonald, the CEO of sister organization One Columbus and a nationally recognized economic development expert.
“Kenny and I have been partners in everything we ve done around here for the last 11 years,” Fischer said. “Since the day he arrived, Kenny took what I thought was a pretty high aspiration for economic development and just blew it out of the water. SWACO: Columbus area had less waste in 2020, but more to do


Each year the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio receives more than 1 million tons of materials that go into the landfill. A majority of those materials could be diverted through recycling, reuse or composting.
On Wednesday, SWACO unveiled its annual community impact report during a Columbus Metropolitan Club discussion that showed in 2020, there was an initial uptick in waste during the pandemic of 30%, which later dropped off.
You don t have all that waste coming in from commercial entities, which would include schools and small businesses. Initially, that was offset by a tremendous surge in residential, said Ty Marsh, executive director of the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio.  What we were finding is that more people were home, so therefore there was more residential waste being generated. We believe that initially, people were cleaning out their basements and were looking for things to do. ....
