After going on ice in 2016, WMNF’s exotic evening of eclectic entertainment—Tropical Heatwave—returned to Ybor City last year. Last Saturday, the community radio station’s revered music festival was back at the Cuban Club which hosted 17 bands—plus the history of hip-hop takeover in the theater—across four stages.
Katie Crutchfield came riding into St. Petersburg on a high yesterday. Two nights beforehand, her band Waxahatchee played Nashville’s Ryman Theater where Lucinda Williams joined in onstage. Waxahatchee’s last two albums have a musical address on the same gravel roads as work by the Americana legend, and Crutchfield was still glowing from the experience as she walked down the spiral stairs at Jannus Live.
Few Florida bands have experienced a rise as meteoric as Flipturn. The indie-rock outfit played Gasparilla Music Festival’s smallest stage in 2019, headlined the mainstage two years ago, and later this year will share a stage with Pearl Jam at Eddie Vedder's Ohana Festival. Here are pics from Flipturn’s April 26 show at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg.
