Scotland to become Britain's 'engine room': Boris launches new plot to rescue Union | Politics | News

The new Cabinet Office base in Glasgow will function as a second UK HQ for the Government department and will support the UK Government’s Queen Elizabeth House base in Edinburgh, which opened last year.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps also announced creating a second headquarters in Birmingham bringing an initial 650 jobs to Birmingham and Leeds by the end of 2025.
The measures are aiming to bring new jobs and investment to Scotland as part of the UK Government’s commitment to level up in every part of the United Kingdom.
Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove said the move will "co-locate the engine room of the UK Government in Scotland".

Scotland news: Tories vow to reverse controversial SNP hate crime bill | Politics | News

The new legislation creates a criminal offence of stirring up hatred against protected groups, expanding on a similar offence based on race that has been on the statute books for decades, as well as consolidating a number of different pieces of hate crime legislation.
But more than 2,000 people responded to a call for views made last year after the publication of the Bill's first iteration, and concerns over freedom of expression led to a number of changes to the legislation before it was passed on Thursday.
Concerns were also raised that conversations over the dinner table that incite hatred could be prosecuted while actors and playwrights could become criminally liable for what they say during plays.

Nicola Sturgeon in spotlight: BBC receives hundreds of complaints over media briefings

Ms Sturgeon is joined by cabinet members and medical experts around three to four days a week.
However, the First Minister used the majority of a recent briefing to criticise her predecessor Alex Salmond, claiming he was peddling conspiracy theories.
The row surrounds whether Ms Sturgeon breached the Scottish Government ministerial code and lied to parliament over meetings between the pair in 2018 regarding unproven harassment claims made against the former First Minister.
Ms Sturgeon denied the allegations put forward by the former SNP leader.

SNP news: Sturgeon allies demand extra cash despite £1.2bn 'strength of Union' boost | Politics | News

Among the cash includes £57 million of investment to turbocharge green recovery whilst the "Union" boost will accelerate the creation of almost 13,000 jobs.
But Scottish Finance Secretary Kate Forbes and SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford warned the Budget was a "return to austerity" and failed to tackle inequality.
The pair have also been calling to make the £20 Universal Credit increase permanent.
In a letter to Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Ms Forbes urged the UK Government to support Scotland as lockdown measures are set to be eased over the next six weeks.
