MEXICO CITY, May 5. /TASS/. A three-day nationwide mourning was declared in Mexico following a deadly subway accident in the country’s capital, according to President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s decree.
"A three-day nationwide mourning is declared due to the May 3 tragedy on Line 12 of the Mexico City subway," reads the decree, published by the Mexican government’s official daily, Diario Oficial de la Federation late on Tuesday.

Trade union's warning
The subway system of Mexico City may face more disasters similar to Monday’s deadly collapse of a metro overpass in the south of the Mexican capital, the secretary general of Mexico’s trade union of subway workers Homero Zavala told reporters on Tuesdy.

“We’re going to get to the truth. We’re not going to cover anything up. This is the request we’re making to the prosecutor’s office. There will be accountability,” she said at a tense press conference on Tuesday.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called for a swift and open investigation.
“There’s no impunity for anyone,” he told reporters. López Obrador is a former mayor of Mexico’s capital and it has been governed by him and his allies since 2000.

MEXICO CITY — The capital had been bracing for the disaster for years.
Ever since it opened nearly a decade ago, the newest Mexico City subway line — a heralded expansion of the second largest subway system in the Americas — had been plagued with structural weaknesses that led engineers to warn of potential accidents. Yet other than a brief, partial shutdown of the line in 2014, the warnings went unheeded by successive governments.
