MEET THE CANDIDATES
Clockwise from top left: Ravi Venkatesh (Labour), Dan Smith (Conservative), Kate Henery (Green), Daniel Legg (Independent) and Michelle Horrobin (Lib Dem) are standing in Penhill and Upper Stratton on May 6 Looking at Penhill now, it’s hard to believe it was once a farm on the outskirts of a much smaller Swindon. The town was growing after the Second World War and new homes were needed. The Penhill estate was built as public housing in the early 1950s. Like its neighbour to the south, Pinehurst, the area suffers from a reputation for deprivation and antisocial behaviour – but it is notable how many people who actually live in the area say there is a strong sense of community there.
LOCAL ELECTIONS
Clockwise from top left: Joseph Polson (Lib Dem), Carl Jones (Conservative), Andrew Osborne (Independent), Ray Ballman (Labour) and Andy Bentley (Green) Housing, crime and anti-social behaviour are all things that matter to the voters of Gorse Hill and Pinehurst. The ward is one of the smallest in Swindon, but one of the most densely populated. It also suffers among the highest rates of deprivation in Swindon and the south west. The Pinehurst West area is in the top five of all 132 different areas in Swindon for deprivation in terms of income, employment, education and crime. The crime rate in the entire ward is twice that of the south west average.
