'No qualms about learning Hindi, but Kannada should be given priority': Prof Doddarange Gowda | Hubballi News

Prof Doddarange Gowda
For more than 40 years, Prof Doddarange Gowda, who was on Friday named president of the 86th Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelana to be held in Haveri from February 26 through 28, has through the numerous songs he has penned for Kannada films been the source of joy for crores of Kannadigas. Among the most versatile figures of contemporary Kannada literature, Prof Doddarange Gowda, in a freeweheeling chat with TOI, held forth on a broad range of issues from language and culture to the state of the nation. Excerpts:
Where do you stand vis-à-vis imposition of Hindi?
There is no question about our having to give highest priority to learning and promoting Kannada. It is our responsibility to preserve our mother tongue. But I have no objection to learning Hindi as a language, and we must be more favourable towards Hindi than towards English. In our state, it is English that is given most importance but our national language is not regarded as highly. Let me clarify that I am no spokesperson for Hindi.

IFS couple documents Kappatagudda wildlife sanctuary's medicinal plants | Hubballi News

‘Kappatagudda a repertoire of medicinal plants of Gadag’ will be unveiled on Sunday
GADAG: The Kappatagudda wildlife sanctuary spans over 244.15 sq km in Gadag, Mundargi and Shirahatti taluks of Gadag district. An IFS couple, Yashpal Kshirsagar and Sonal Vrishini, have now come up with the book ‘Kappatagudda a repertoire of medicinal plants of Gadag’.
Kshirsagar, who is now the DCF in Dharwad, told STOI that he worked as DCF Gadag from 2015 to 2018 and had come across a huge repertoire of medicinal plants during various field visits.
“Although, the medicinal plants of Kappatagudda were mapped by Foundation of Revitalization of Local Health Tradition (FRLHT) a few years ago, the need to present an elaborative distribution of various medicinal plant species emphasising the presence of this unique landscape was felt. We at the Gadag division decided to be compile the information available at numerous places in form of a book. My work was continued by my successor, who by chance happens to be my better-half. Our joint work for four and half years has culminated in the publication of this book,” he said.

Number of active Covid cases slides in north Karnataka districts | Hubballi News

Picture used for representational purpose only
HUBBALLI: It was a grim period for the districts of North Karnataka when Covid cases showed little signs of declining – a phase that continued till November – with the JSL plant in Ballari even becoming a ‘Cluster Case’ site. But the situation is much brighter now, with the number of active cases declining in most districts in the region.
In most districts, the number of fresh cases being reported has slipped to single digits, a steep fall from the dark days of September and October, when each district was reporting around 100 to 150 fresh cases every day.
