The N.C. Court of Appeals has upheld a ruling allowing a fired state trooper to get his job back. The unanimous decision affirms that the State Highway Patrol lacked just cause to fire Trooper Joe Locklear in 2021.

The latest legal filing from a fired Winston-Salem State University professor urges the N.C. Supreme Court to take his case and tackle the issue of “administrative deference.” It’s the same issue the John Locke Foundation emphasized in a brief supporting professor Alvin Mitchell’s case.

The University of North Carolina System is asking the state’s highest court to dismiss the latest appeal from a fired Winston-Salem State University professor. The John Locke Foundation urged the N.C. Supreme Court earlier this month to hear the professor’s arguments.

A unanimous N.C. Court of Appeals panel has affirmed a trial court’s decision that a former state trooper should have his law enforcement certification restored. Tuesday’s ruling in favor of Maurice Devalle reversed a state commission’s decision that Devalle lacked “good moral character.”
