CAMPAIGNERS are pressing for a historic gateway to be given a new lease of life. Hyde Gate is one of only two remaining structures of Hyde Abbey, the medieval monastery where King Alfred the Great was reburied. It is now best-noted as a pigeon roost, place for drug dealing and public urinal. But members of Hyde 900 want to revamp the grade one listed building and turn it into a cultural centre. Hyde 900 founder Edward Fennell last Thursday lobbied the town forum, which had heard that action is to be taken to deter pigeons.
