The Friends of Haiku Stairs, the group attempting to block the city’s demolition of the once legally accessible steel steps built along a sheer ridgeline above Kaneohe, isn’t the only entity interested in the Windward Oahu landmark.
The officers' behavior fell outside the scope of their employment, the City and County of Honolulu said in a motion to dismiss a civil lawsuit.
The city argues that three Honolulu police officers, not the county, are liable for damages resulting from an alleged chase, crash and cover-up in September 2021 that left two people permanently injured.
