Devany Veloz slightly opened her eyes. Amid the darkness, she could only hear the machines she was connected to.
She could not move. And with a tube entering her body through the windpipe, she could not speak.
It was July 19, and Veloz was emerging from a 48-day coma that doctors had induced in her battle with COVID-19.

Even today the 26-year-old Grand Prairie resident isn’t sure whether it was day or night when she began to awaken. She remained connected to the ventilator for four more days, only half-conscious.
