Know what it says? they absolutely know it. once you program the flight management system, there s an instrument called the primary flight display, pfd. it will have a compass rose, a magenta line. whatever you planned in for your route, it s your gps map. it has a magenta line, airplane symbol. it will show the track you re going to fly. if they begin to fly the track, let s say in this primary was changed to the secondary, unknowingly, as soon as they got to the waypoint where they had their last radio communication, they would have a hook in their flight plan or in this magenta line showing that there s a left turn. that was what happened with callie colombia, americanairlines in cali years ago, they put in the approach for cali as they were coming in over the mountains. they knew cali was in front of them. they could see the lights. they mistakenly put the wrong identifier in the primary flight display. the magenta line instead of going straight toward cali all ....

yeah. so les abend is here, and captain abend, i m sure that looks extraordinarily familiar to you as where marty and mitch are sitting. it doesn t make sense to me as a novice here that anybody would have some kind of a nefarious plan to hijack or take a plane off course for bad reasons and then actually fly established routes and established waypoints. if that s your intention, why are you following the super highways everyone else is on? well, i don t think it s not necessarily following the super highways. there s just one waypoint that if the information is correct that was entered. okay? and if i had, as i ve asserted before, if i had an emergency situation, or some sort of abnormality that compelled me to want to return to base, i would want to enter in that airport or a diversionary airport. so it may have just been one point which if it was an airport, it would have been four a four-letter identifier ....

However, once in the air, it is possible to reprogram it and go a different way. you can show us just how simply that s done. yes, absolutely. if you look at the screen here, this magenta line is our flight path. this is our route to our destination. the apex of that triangle is us. all you need to do to change course is we type in the identifier from where we want to go. so in this case, this airport here. i m going to type it in this little key pad here. then you just press a button up here and the computer asking you with this white line, are you sure you want to do that? are you sure you want to make that deviation? if you are sure, you press this button and the airplane will start to make a turn in that direction. you can see actually that it may look dramatic as far as the viewpoint from the cockpit here, but if you re a passenger sitting in the back, really this just seems like kind of a normal maneuver and you probably wouldn t have thought too much of it, even though right ....
